Why Is This Generation So Messed Up?
It feels like a crime to be born between 1997 and 2012 witnessing the highs and lows of life, studying hard for distinction yet suffering from a lack of real-world skills. From being constrained by old beliefs to becoming the internet generation with exposure to everything earlier, GenZs are referred to as messed up and troublemakers. Though they have flaws, they are not enough for them to suffer from a lack of social acceptance.
From juggling multiple jobs and gigs with personal and social life to becoming perfectionist, their lives often affect their well-being. Besides, some are over-possessive, while other times, they are just societal causes.
You might even believe that GenZs can’t work well, affecting their contribution to the global economy. There are various reasons why Is GenZ messed up, and we have covered you all with it!
Why Is GenZ So Messed Up?
There are varied reasons why GenZ is messed up; while if you are a millennial, then do understand the lack of empathy they face and fill the void.
Below-mentioned is a list of causes messing up GenZs:
Dissatisfaction Due To Mobile and Social Media Addiction
Around 54% of GenZ users use social media for 4 hours or more daily, and digitization has increased its reliance on social media. Besides, the audacity of showcasing a perfect life makes their life a myth, creating stress. However, such reasons have led to social isolation and addiction in many.
Even greater exposure to diverse topics makes them more insecure about their concerns and feel disconnected from life. This loneliness, insecurity, and digital dependence due to social media addiction makes it difficult for GenZ to be down-to-earth.
Economic Instability Leading To Financial Struggles
With rising costs, inflation, and global crises at their peak, GenZ is at a greater loss. They have student loans to pay, and fall short of the expenses for accommodation, food, and other things even during their job. If not, they suffer from various limitations.
Like the gig economy, which creates a lack of consistent income with lesser job security, even usual jobs now pay less. This makes it difficult for them to bear their expenses despite multiple jobs, which makes them annoyed and frustrated about the future.
Around 22% of working GenZs vow to become financially independent by 30 years, yet the current trends render them dependent.
Generational Divide and Legacy Burden
GenZ is instead a transition generation between the 20th and 21st centuries, therefore witnessing greater changes. From their ancestors facing wars and economic recession, GenZs have carried unresolved generational trauma.
Besides, the generational divide whose ancestors resisted change is struggling to be a part of the change for such reasons; they have been numb and resilient about their opinions. Their ancestral beliefs have constantly contradicted contemporary needs, and hence, they have had strained relationships.
Due to these reasons, they have even felt embarrassed by their peers due to old beliefs while still not meeting the older generation’s expectations. Hence, they end up feeling drained. While a constant comparison with them witnessing orthodox traditions resulted in them disrespecting their parents and elders. Meanwhile, GenZs often develop a superiority complex due to miscellaneous reasons that also cause them to lack gratitude.
Fake Relationships and Friendships
From sharing memes to posting relationship statuses, friendship goals, and everything to mimic picture-perfect relationships, GenZs have forgotten authentic ones. They measure the amount of effort and closeness in terms of dates, number of likes, comments, tags, stories, and more while making it difficult for them to realize true friends.
Moreover, many suffer from not getting enough love, support, trust, and understanding from their immediate families. They start hating themselves. Sometimes, they even drift towards the person from whom they feel loved, though the relationship would be toxic or fake, but they don’t realize it.
Hence, they start developing issues with themselves and a lack of acceptance. They feel alone in difficult times and mess up with themselves due to superficial friendships and relationships.
Unhealthy Food Habits
From taking inspiration from the West to having greater exposure to diverse cultures and binge-watching for escapism, this generation has unhealthy food habits. Earlier confined to Chinese and Americans now craving Ramen and similar dishes from different cuisines; they suffer from poor nutrition. Apart from that, a lack of physical activity further adds up.
Hence, they suffer from poor nutrition, obesity, and low energy. It does affect mental health and accelerates stress due to incomplete chores.
Competition Creating Stress and Affecting Mental Health
GenZs have suffered from constant comparison by parents and society. Besides, the competitive environment where admissions to meager jobs like security guard and white collar jobs have cut-throat competition. Even social media has led to GenZs wanting a perfect life compared to their peers or influencers.
Such comparisons create stress, while competition creates a hustle culture. Apart from that, other reasons, as mentioned above, with pressure to keep up leads to them burning out, working extra, and spoiling their lifestyle. Hence, they are messing up themselves and affecting others.
Lack of Proper Direction
Another indirect cause behind GenZ messing up is a lack of proper direction. Despite their struggles, superiority, and inferiority complexes, they lack proper direction. Some of their parents have not given them space to open up, while others feel embarrassed.
Additionally, many have resources but suffer from “all directions leading to none”, and due to reasons like societal, stubbornness, or the fear of being judged, they don’t have the right direction. Sometimes, even the generational gap between their elders adds up to it.
The latter results in failure, sometimes hurting their ego, while other times, society ill-treats them. Such unsuccessful instances, which lie from minor to major, lead them to develop anger issues, depression, and even stories of self-harm.
Final Words On How To Solve Problem With Younger Generation Today
While you would have your children or other acquaintances, they might often leave you in awe of why this generation is so messed up. Thinking so is obvious, but being in a constant strife of judgment isn’t easy. Even we millennials have set up age barriers for milestones, and stereotypically, GenZs are forced towards it.
Moreover, changing scenarios like increased expenses, low wages, lack of emotional support, and superiority are contributing factors. If you are a GenZ, discuss it with someone you trust or who understands you. Besides, if you are a parent, do not burden them. Always give them an open space to share their opinions on issues they face without fear or hesitation.
Rest guide them correctly and provide support and understanding to them. Especially pay attention to issues like disturbance or troubled mental health to make them feel accepted and loved.
